Gelezen in december 2023
December is altijd een beetje een vreemde leesmaand voor mij.
Enerzijds zit ik in een soort van voltooiingsfase, waarbij ik nog zoveel mogelijk series wil uitlezen zodat ik ze van mijn lijst kan schrappen. Anderzijds voel ik ook een soort van rem, waarbij ik wel zin heb in het lezen van bepaalde boeken, maar ik mezelf daar toch bij tegen houd, want kan ik die wel nog voor het einde van de maand uitlezen, want een boek over twee maanden heen lezen vind ik al lastig, maar over twee jaren, howla past op!
Dus ja, in die zin was het goed dat ik in november nog zo’n succesvolle YA-serie was beginnen lezen, waardoor ik in december al meteen twee boeken had die ik zeker wel ging kunnen afronden. Daarnaast was er nog een nieuwe leesclub, waarbij ik een boek dat ik al eventjes in de kast had staan omdat het me intimideerde, dan toch nog in 2023 uitlas. Voor de rest is dit een goeie maand om verzamelingen met kortverhalen te lezen!
En zo las ik in december dan toch nog 11 boeken, goed voor 4318 bladzijden. Het gemiddelde december boek komt zo op 393 blz/boek.
Voor de beoordelingen was het een vrij gemiddelde maand waarbij het gemiddelde boek van december op 3,3 sterretjes komt.
Qua doelgroep varieerde ik tussen 4 Young Adult boeken en 7 volwassen boeken.
Zoals steeds varieerde ik ook in leeswijze, met 3 e-boeken, 6 audioboeken en 2 boekenkast-boeken.
Voor de genres wisselde ik tussen 5 genres, namelijk thriller (1), sci-fi (1), romantiek (1), mysterie (4) en fantasy (4).
Voor de taal bleef ik weer in het Engels hangen en las ik geen enkel boek in het Nederlands.

Boek drie, en voor zover ik weet ook het laatste boek, in de Aaron Falk reeks van Jane Harper is denk ik wel mijn favoriet van de drie.
Harper weet als geen ander hoe ze een karaktergedreven verhaal kan opbouwen. De mysteries in dit verhaal worden heel langzaam opgebouwd, terwijl er toch steeds een onderstroom van spanning aanwezig is. Steengoed.

Genre: Mysterie

Dit was gewoon ok.
Een goede compagnon om naar te luisteren tijdens het handwerken, maar niet echt memorabel. Het is ook zo’n boek waar je gewoon alles van slikt terwijl je aan het lezen bent, maar van zodra je ergens bij stil staat en over gaat nadenken, dan begint het serieus barstjes te vertonen. Deze slaagde er ook niet echt in mij dat typische Agatha Christie/cozy mystery gevoel te geven.

Dit begon interessant, maar ik verloor eigenlijk vrij snel mijn interesse. De personages spraken mij totaal niet aan en het verhaal op zijn geheel was nogal saai. De uiteindelijke ontknoping kon het voor mij ook niet echt redden

Ik was dol op de Arc of a Scythe-serie toen ik deze in 2018/2019 las. Ik was een beetje verrast toen ik ontdekte dat er in 2022 nog een boek uitkwam, gezien het toch een goed afgeronde trilogie was, maar aangezien het om extra kortverhalen gaat, is het wel logisch, aangezien ik denk dat deze wereld nog veel meer verhalen te vertellen heeft.
En al met al vond ik het leuk om deze kleine extraatjes te lezen, maar ik denk wel dat ik er meer van had genoten als ik dit dichter bij de originele serie had gelezen.

Genre: Fantasy

Tegen mijn verwachtingen in gaat dit boek niet meteen verder met het verhaal zoals het in boek één eindigde, maar in plaats daarvan duiken nieuwe verhalen en missies op. Sommige lezers zullen dit waarschijnlijk niet appreciëren, gezien het de plot niet echt vooruit brengt, maar ik heb hier best wel van genoten.
Ik blijf fan van de manier waarop de Arthur-legende herschreven werd en van de onderliggende
boodschap over de kosten van vooruitgang, mens versus natuur.
“How unfortunate that nature was both the most peaceful and the most dangerous place possible. But that was its duality. It gave life and it took it, provided and withheld, offered beauty and danger in equal measure. Camelot was safe and ordered and structured, so many things put in place to separate people from nature. Roofs and walls. Pipes for water. Swords with men to wield them. Gezien dit ook een YA-boek is, waren er wel een paar dingen die veel te snel werden afgehandeld of mijn volwassen ogen in mijn hoofd deden rollen, maar over het algemeen heb ik echt genoten van dit meanderende boek. Het einde was uitstekend, de perfect opzet voor de finale!

Jammer dat de conclusie van deze trilogie, meteen ook het zwakste boek was. Hoewel dit nog steeds leuk weg las, was het uiteindelijk slordig en ietwat teleurstellend, door het ontbreken aan charme en emotionele diepgang.
De auteur wil duidelijk een aantal boodschappen overbrengen en het boek zo meer cultureel relevant maken, maar hierbij overspeelde ze toch wel wat haar hand.
Personages gaan zich opeens anders gaan gedragen en relaties worden plotseling uit het niets onthuld, ten koste van het overkoepelende verhaal, dat uiteindelijk een beetje te gemakkelijk wordt afgehandeld.
Hoewel deze finale dus een beetje struikelend de finishlijn overkomt, ben ik toch blij dat ik deze serie heb uit gelezen. Absoluut bewonderenswaardig hoe de Arthur-legende werd heruitgevonden, met een heel uniek en divers verhaal tot gevolg.

Voor de laatste opdracht in mijn “Adventure in Aeldia” had ik een boek met een vos op de cover of in de titel nodig, dus toen ik dit nog ongelezen op mijn boekenplank zag staan, leek mij dit de perfecte gelegenheid. Bovendien is er iets met de kerstperiode waardoor ik al eens graag korte verhaaltjes lees, zeker als het sprookjes zijn.
Dit las echt heel leuk weg. Heel gezellige, duistere sprookjes, dikwijls met een kleine verwijzing naar een bekend sprookje of mythe.
De illustraties zijn ook absoluut een meerwaarde. De illustratie krijgt elke volgende pagina iets extra’s, wat leuk ontdekken is, samen met de ontwikkelingen in het verhaal zelf.

🎧 Jewell, Lisa – None of This is True ★★★★
Genre: Thriller
A few days later, Alix and Josie bump into each other again, this time outside Alix’s children’s school. Josie has been listening to Alix’s podcasts and thinks she might be an interesting subject for her series. She is, she tells Alix, on the cusp of great changes in her life.
Josie’s life appears to be strange and complicated, and although Alix finds her unsettling, she can’t quite resist the temptation to keep making the podcast. Slowly she starts to realise that Josie has been hiding some very dark secrets, and before she knows it, Josie has inveigled her way into Alix’s life—and into her home.
But, as quickly as she arrived, Josie disappears. Only then does Alix discover that Josie has left a terrible and terrifying legacy in her wake, and that Alix has become the subject of her own true crime podcast, with her life and her family’s lives under mortal threat.
Who is Josie Fair? And what has she done?
Dit was alweer het zesde boek dat ik las van deze auteur. Ze waren allemaal altijd heel erg meeslepend en deze was daar zeker geen uitzondering op.
Het audioboek maakte het des te meeslepender, vooral voor de gedeelten van de podcast en true crime-show.
Het verhaal zelf is er eentje dat verdeeldheid zaait.
Zonder iets van het verhaal te verklappen, er passeren nogal wat moreel twijfelachtige personages de revue en soms was het moeilijk mijn mening over deze personen en hun acties te scheiden van mijn mening over het verhaal. Dit is een dikke pluim voor de auteur, want dit betekent dat ze mij volledig mee had en haar personages als echte mensen lazen. Ik kan haar schrijftalent dus absoluut niet in vraag stellen!
Wat ik wel in vraag stel is wat nu in hemelsnaam waar was van gans dit verhaal?!
Als lezer krijg je verschillende opties voor geschoteld en ook op het eind wordt nog eens extra twijfel op het relaas geworpen. Dit was duidelijk zo gepland, gezien de titel van het boek. Echt goed bedacht en uitgevoerd!
Hallett, Janice – The Christmas Appeal ★★★
Genre: Mysterie
Christmas in Lower Lockwood, and the Fairway Players are busy rehearsing their festive pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, to raise money for the church roof appeal. But despite the season, goodwill is distinctly lacking amongst the amateur dramatics enthusiasts. Sarah-Jane is fending off threats to her new position as Chair, the fibreglass beanstalk might be full of asbestos, and a someone is intent on ruining the panto even before the curtain goes up.
Of course there’s also the matter of the dead body. Who could possibly have had the victim on their naughty list? Join lawyers Femi and Charlotte as they read the round robins, examine the emails and pore over the police transcripts. Will the show go on?
Dat ik fan ben van Janice Halletts boeken wisten jullie misschien al wel. Haar doorbraak “The Appeal” is haar meest populaire werk tot nu toe, hoewel niet mijn favoriet, die is weggelegd voor “The Twyford Code”. Wat niet wil zeggen dat ik “The Appeal” niet goed vond, integendeel. Dus toen ik zag dat er een nieuw verhaal met dezelfde personages uit was gekomen met een kerst-thema, moest ik deze natuurlijk in december nog lezen!
De opzet van dit verhaal is vrij gelijkaardig aan zijn voorganger.
Twee juridische assistenten krijgen van hun baas een dossier vol correspondentie met de vraag wat zij hieruit concluderen. Als lezer krijgen we deze correspondentie – bestaande uit e-mails, chat berichten en sms’jes – op dezelfde manier te lezen, zodat we mee kunnen raden naar wat er gaande is.
Door het format las dit opnieuw als een trein.
Heel moeilijk weg te leggen, want ik wou altijd snel even het volgende berichtje lezen, en het volgende, waardoor ik het boek heel snel had uitgelezen.
En de berichtjes! Sommigen waren zo heerlijk kattig en bitsig, waardoor ze zoveel onthulden over de personages en hun onderlinge relaties. Heel vernuftig gedaan.
Het uiteindelijke blootgelegde verhaal vond ik uiteindelijk wel een pak minder interessant. De impact was minimaal en het voelde uiteindelijk allemaal vrij zinloos aan.
Coldbreath, Alice – A Contracted Spouse for the Prizefighter (Victorian Prizefighters #3) ★★★★
Genre: Romantiek
Clem Dabney, aspiring theatre owner and ex-prizefighter has built up his supper and song business as far as he can take it. In order to expand he now needs a theatre. When Theodora appears before him with her outrageous proposition, he sees his chance and devil take the consequences.
Their marriage is purely a business arrangement, so Theo is not worried about Clem’s reputation and Clem is not concerned about Theo’s distinct lack of feminine charm. Now that’s all settled and out of the way, both agree things should be straightforward enough… Why then, is Clem acting the jealous husband when Theo finds herself among a throng of new admirers?
Nog eentje die ik las om een serie te kunnen afvinken.
In eerste instantie wilde ik dit boek bewaren, omdat ik bijna doorheen de backlist van deze auteur ben en ik toch nog een boek achter de hand wou houden. Maar aan de andere kant vind ik eind December een moeilijke periode om een boek te beginnen. Ik wil iets niet al te zwaar, dat ik nog voor het nieuwe jaar kan uitlezen, want ik draag niet graag boeken over. Dus uiteindelijk was deze de perfecte kandidaat uit mijn TBR, die ook nog eens mee werkte aan een leesdoel!
En ja, deze was net weer zo geweldig als de vorige boeken.
Verrassend, uiterst origineel en gezellig om te lezen. Een beetje langdradig misschien, met wat te veel bijkomende personages en onnodige drama, maar uiteindelijk deed het precies wat ik ervan verlangde: mij entertainen en transporteren, zonder dat ik al te veel moest nadenken, maar toch geen dertien-in-een-dozijn romance was.
Ik ben fan! En ik hoop dat er meer boeken in deze serie komen!

None of this is true heb ik ook nog op mijn e-reader staan. Ben ook wel fan van de boeken van Lisa Jewell! Erg benieuwd naar. En je hebt ook benieuwd gemaakt naar dat laatste boek!

Het boek van Leigh Bardugo staat hier ook nog op me te wachten maar wel de vertaling. Al viel het me onlangs zowel bij het bekijken van de boeken die ik vorig jaar las als bij het doorlopen van mijn TBR op dat er vooral heel veel Engelstalige op stonden.
