Gelezen in juni 2023
Oef, we zijn al augustus, maar ik schreef nog niet over mijn gelezen boeken van juni!
Eerlijk gezegd heb ik het schrijven van recensies de laatste tijd wat verwaarloosd en eenmaal ik achterop geraak is het toch lastig om bij te benen, gezien de tijd niet stil blijft staan natuurlijk.
Maar ook, juni was echt een barslechte leesmaand en het merendeel van mijn notities bij de gelezen boeken waren “saai” “meh” of “pffffffff”, lol. Sjah, daar geraak ik niet echt ver mee bij het schrijven van een goeie recensie!
Maar dit weekend raapte ik toch mijn goesting bijeen en lukte het me uiteindelijk toch om vrij snel voor elk begonnen boek een paar duidelijke zinnen te schrijven. Ik zeg bewust elk begonnen boek, want in juni legde ik een record aantal boek weer on-uitgelezen weg!
In juni begon ik te lezen in 10 boeken, maar las ik uiteindelijk slechts 7 boeken helemaal uit, waarvan ik bij sommige achteraf gezien misschien ook beter de handdoek in de ring had gegooid!
Het aantal gelezen bladzijden is zo’n 2800, maar als ik enkel de uitgelezen boeken meetel dan is juni goed voor 2368 bladzijden. Het gemiddelde uitgelezen juni boek komt zo op 338 blz/boek.
Zoals gezegd was juni vooral een maand van laagtes en was de maximum score dat een boek kreeg een gemiddelde 3 sterren. Van alle uitgelezen boeken komt de gemiddelde score op 2,7 sterretjes, wat nog lager is dan de kleurloze meimaand!
In juni wou ik vooral een deuk maken in mijn vele ongelezen abonementsdoos-boeken, waardoor ik in vergelijking met andere maanden veel meer YA las. Ik begon te lezen in 5 Young Adult boeken, maar las er maar 3 uit; en ik begon ook in 5 volwassen boeken, waarvan ik er 4 van uit las.
Zoals steeds varieerde ik ook in leeswijze, met 2 e-boeken, 2 audioboeken, en 6 boekenkast-boeken, vanwelke ik er 3 niet uit las en dus uit mijn boekenkast gaan verdwijnen.
Voor de genres wisselde ik tussen 5 genres, namelijk thriller (1), romantiek (1), mysterie (1), sci-fi (2) en fantasy (5).
Voor de taal bleef ik weer in het Engels hangen en las ik geen enkel boek in het Nederlands.

Ik heb de laatste tijd echt pech met de sci-fi boeken die ik uitkies.
Ik zag keihard uit naar dit boek en was ervan overtuigd dat het me van mijn sokken ging blazen, maar uiteindelijk viel het tegen, ondanks het opwindende uitgangspunt en een aantal coole ideeën (ik vond bijvoorbeeld het fragment over heilige bergen en hoe die in quasi al onze mythologieën en religies voorkomen heel intrigerend). Helaas ontbrak het in de uitvoering, ik vond het veelal saai en bepaalde onthullingen bleken op het randje af belachelijk.
Ik zie in andere recensies veel opmerkingen over de verteltechniek en ik kan de algemene consensus hierover alleen maar bijtreden, gezien dit ook één van mijn eerste opmerkingen was toen ik het boek begon.
Het verhaal wordt verteld aan de hand van extreem gedetailleerde brieven die ons hoofdpersonage naar zijn tienernichtje schrijft, en zowel het niveau aan details als de ontvanger zorgden dat dit helemaal niet geloofwaardig overkwam. Het zou waarschijnlijk beter hebben gewerkt als een persoonlijk dagboek of als brieven aan zijn zoon, waardoor de onthulling van zijn dood meer impact zou hebben gehad.
Wat me ook stoorde was het inconsistente gebruik van eenheden. Dit zou een internationale wetenschappelijke expeditie moeten zijn, dus het gebruik van het Brits-Amerikaans maatsysteem voor bijvoorbeeld afstanden voelde echt onnatuurlijk voor mij. Dit is misschien wat muggenzifterig, maar kijk, ik ergerde me er aan.
En als dat mijn enige probleem was geweest, dan had ik daar zeker over kunnen kijken, maar uiteindelijk heb ik me vooral verveeld in dit boek en voelde ik me geen enkel moment emotioneel geïnvesteerd. Het teleurstellende en onbevredigende einde bezegelde de deal van een flauw, tegenvallend boek voor mij volledig.
Bodard, Aliette de – The Red Scholar’s Wake (DNF)
Genre: Sci-Fi
Rice Fish: sentient ship, leader of the infamous Red Banner pirate fleet, wife of the Red Scholar. Or at least, she was the latter before her wife died under suspicious circumstances. Now isolated and alone, Rice Fish wants Xích Si’s help to find out who struck against them and why. Marrying Xích Si means Rice Fish can offer Xích Si protection, in exchange for Xích Si’s technical fluency: a business arrangement with nothing more to it.
But as the investigation goes on, Rice Fish and Xích Si find themselves falling for each other. As the interstellar war against piracy intensifies and the five fleets start fighting each other, they will have to make a stand-and to decide what kind of future they have together…
An exciting space opera and a beautiful romance, from an exceptional SF author.

En de ontgoocheling in mijn uitgekozen sci-fi boeken blijft duren!
Elke vorm van inleiding, opzet of wereldopbouw ontbrak hier. Veel dingen klonken wel interessant, maar niks werd uitgelegd, waardoor het gewoon heel verwarrend en onduidelijk lezen was. Dit voelde eerder als een tweede boek in een reeks, waarbij we als lezer al vertrouwd zijn met de wereld, dan een alleenstaand verhaal.
“A barrage of images and sounds overwhelmed her – too fast, too confused, too jumbled”
Bovenstaand citaat beschrijft perfect mijn ervaring tijdens het lezen. Daarbij kwam een nogal vreemde reden voor een verstandhuwelijk dat toch alle signalen gaf van instalove, waardoor ik besloot mezelf niet te dwingen verder te lezen.
🎧 Swanson, Peter – The Kind Worth Saving (Henry Kimball/Lily Kintner #2) ★★★
Genre: Thriller
Now Joan needs his help in proving that her husband is cheating. But what should be a simple case of infidelity becomes much more complicated when Kimball finds two bodies in an uninhabited suburban home with a “for sale” sign out front. Suddenly it feels like the past is repeating itself, and Henry must go back to one of the worst days of his life to uncover the truth.
Is it possible that Joan knows something about that day, something she’s hidden all these years? Could there still be a killer out there, someone who believes they have gotten away with murder? Henry is determined to find out, but as he steps closer to the truth, a murderer is getting closer to him, and in this hair-raising game of cat and mouse only one of them will survive.
Dit was het onnodige vervolg op het geweldige The Kind Worth Killing, dat niet echt in de buurt kwam van zijn voorganger.
Het was nog steeds heel vermakelijk lezen, maar het slaagde er niet in om te verrassen of om evenveel indruk te maken. Ook de terugkerende personages deden me weinig, wat misschien anders zou zijn geweest als ik eerst het andere boek had herlezen, maar zoals het staat was dit gewoon een snel en gemakkelijk lezende thriller waarvan ik snel de details ga vergeten.
Duncan, Emily A. – Wicked Saints (Something Dark and Holy #1) ★★

Ugh, nog een boek dat ik beter niet had uitgelezen.
In plaats daarvan heb ik me er doorheen geworsteld, ondanks dat niets me aantrok aan de personages, die zowel flets als onorigineel waren, en gans hun verhaal me geen moer kon schelen.
Het vrouwelijk hoofdpersonage was een enorme zaag (het aantal keer ze verzuchte dat iets niet eerlijk was, jeetje) en haar wispelturigheid over haar gevoelens was zo repetitief en totaal ongeloofwaardig. Ondanks haar interessante krachten, deed ze eigenlijk weinig, anders dan een hulpmiddel zijn bij het opzetten van de twee mannelijke personages , wiens namen, trouwens, voor mij al verklapten wat de grote plottwist ging zijn, die me uiteindelijk ook helemaal niks deed: Mal = kwaadaardig; Serefin = engel = goed/beter.
De andere personages waren nog fletser en vloeiden allemaal in elkaar over, de ene met een nog moeilijkere naam dan de andere.
De wereld en magie hadden wel een aantal coole concepten, maar er was bitter weinig basis, opbouw of enige vorm van motivering, zoals bijvoorbeeld het ontstaan van de oorlog.
Kortom, voor mij een onvolledig, ongefundeerd, gehaast en saai verhaal, dat een beetje te veel naar de Grisha-trilogie heeft gekeken.

Ik vond het idee en de algehele setting van dit boek erg leuk, maar ik kon niet echt in de schrijfstijl komen, die erg inspannend en vermoeiend was. Het verhaal ontwikkelde zich erg traag en kon me niet echt boeien. Het kon me gewoon niet schelen wat er gebeurde met de plot of de personages.
Jones, Jaida & Bennett Danielle – Master of One (DNF)

Nog een boek waar ik maar niet in kon komen. Verwarrend, moeilijk te volgen, geen diepgang, nauwelijks wereldvorming, geen andere motieven dan “we zijn slecht en willen meer macht”, magie wordt totaal niet uitgeleg, behalve dat het van de elfen is gestolen. Platte personages, zelfs ons hoofdpersonage Rags, wiens belangrijkste eigenschap is dat hij toch wel bijzonder veel expliciet vloekt voor een YA-boek.
Begon behoorlijk intrigerend en de flaptekst beloofde een heel spannend verhaal, maar het was gewoon saai.
Op dit punt begin ik me af te vragen of het probleem ligt bij de boeken die ik kies of dat ik het probleem ben?
Hazelwood, Ali – Under One Roof (The STEMinist Novellas #1) ★★★
Genre: Romantiek (hedendaags)
Mara, Sadie, and Hannah are friends first, scientists always. Though their fields of study might take them to different corners of the world, they can all agree on this universal truth: when it comes to love and science, opposites attract and rivals make you burn….
As an environmental engineer, Mara knows all about the delicate nature of ecosystems. They require balance. And leaving the thermostat alone. And not stealing someone else’s food. And other rules Liam, her detestable big-oil lawyer of a roommate, knows nothing about. Okay, sure, technically she’s the interloper. Liam was already entrenched in his aunt’s house like some glowering grumpy giant when Mara moved in, with his big muscles and kissable mouth just sitting there on the couch tempting respectable scientists to the dark side…but Helena was her mentor and Mara’s not about to move out and give up her inheritance without a fight.
The problem is, living with someone means getting to know them. And the more Mara finds out about Liam, the harder it is to loathe him…and the easier it is to love him.
Na toch wel wat te hebben geworsteld om een boek te vinden waarin ik kon verdwijnen, besloot ik het roer om te gooien en iets luchthartigs, fluffy en kort te zoeken om te lezen.
En dit is precies wat dit was. Gewoon een luchtig verhaaltje dat in één ruk uitgelezen kan worden.

Ik hield echt van het concept van dit boek en hoe het gebruikt werd om geleidelijk aan meer over onze personages en het waarom te onthullen. Hoewel ik vond dat het verhaal een beetje te lang aansleepte, heb ik er over het algemeen van genoten en vond ik het einde bevredigend en passend.
Córdova, Zoraida – Incendiary (Hollow Crown #1) ★★★

Niets te grensverleggend, maar voldoende meeslepend en boeiend.
Na alle DNF’s en flauwe fantasieboeken was ik zo blij om eindelijk nog eens een wereld te ontdekken waar ik enige interesse voor voelde, waardoor ik me dit boek waarschijnlijk met meer plezier zal herinneren dan het verhaal op zich misschien waard is.
Niet dat er iets mis mee was, maar baanbrekend was het ook niet. Het is een vrij standaard YA-rebellieverhaal, met veel voorkomende plotelementen en een paar voorspelbare wendingen, maar ook met een interessant magiesysteem, meeslepende schrijfstijl en een einde waardoor ik meteen het vervolg wilde oppikken.
Córdova, Zoraida – Illusionary (Hollow Crown #2) ★★★

Leuke, bevredigende en perfect afgeronde finale.
Dit deel ging voornamelijk op dezelfde manier verder als boek één: een beetje cliché, enigszins voorspelbaar, maar over het algemeen vermakelijk.
De epiloog voelde een beetje afgerateld en info-dumpy aan, maar het sluit tegelijkertijd ook alle vragen over de toekomst van de personages af, wat ik wel kan waarderen.
Over het algemeen vond ik deze duologie gewoon oké. Het las leuk weg, maar laat geen blijvende indruk na en ik zal het verhaal en de personages ook snel weer zijn vergeten.
