Gelezen in juni 2022
Voor mijn TBR van juni wou ik aan vier opdrachten voldoen:
- een serie voltooien
- verder lezen in een serie
- een boek dat al minstens 5 jaar op mijn TBR stond lezen
- een nieuw uitgegeven boek lezen
Alle vier de opdrachten konden met succes worden afgevinkt, waarbij ik zelfs 2 series uitlas, 2 series verder las, 2 TBR-veteranen las en 2 boeken uitgegeven in 2022 las.
Sommige boeken voldeden weliswaar aan meer dan één van deze opdrachten, maar dit neemt niet weg dat juni een behoorlijke maand was waarin ik 9 boeken volledig uit las. Dit was goed voor 3358 bladzijden, waardoor het gemiddelde juni boek 373 blz/boek telt.
Mijn beoordelingen deze maand gingen door het ganse scala van opties, van een niet uitgelezen boek tot een boek waar ik 5 sterren aan gaf en alles daar tussen.
Dit resulteerde uiteindelijk in de laagste gemiddelde beoordeling die ik ooit al voor een maand heb gehad, met 2,8 sterretjes voor het gemiddelde juni boek.
Qua doelgroep varieerde ik tussen Young Adult met 4 boeken en 5 volwassen boeken.
De manier waarop ik las wisselde tussen luisterboeken (4), e-boeken (4) en eigen boeken met 2 boekenkast boeken, waarvan ik eentje niet uit las.
Zoals steeds zat ook in de gelezen genres wat variatie met 4 verschillende genres, namelijk fantasy (3), sci-fi (3), romantiek (1) en thriller (1).
En dan ook, zoals steeds, weinig te melden over de gelezen taal, waar Engels nog steeds de leiding neemt. Ik las geen enkel boek in het Nederlands.

🎧 Ahern, Cecelia – Flawed (Flawed #1) ★★★

Dit was een boek waar ik nu eigenlijk niet meer in geïnteresseerd was en de enige reden waarom ik het toch wou lezen was omdat ik het een aantal jaar geleden in een Owlcrate doos had ontvangen en het nog steeds ongelezen in mijn kast stond. Ik had het al een paar keer vast gepakt om eigenlijk te lezen, maar andere boeken trokken me altijd meer aan. Nu ik ontdekte dat het als audioboek beschikbaar was op Storytel, besloot ik het eindelijk eens op te zetten, terwijl ik wat achterstand in mijn genredeken weg haakte.
En kijk eens aan, ik was heel aangenaam verrast. Hoewel dit boek me deed terug denken aan andere typische dystopische YA-romans, was de maatschappij uniek en intrigerend genoeg om mij helemaal mee te trekken. Ik moest een beetje wennen aan het hoofdpersonage, maar dit was zo bedoeld, gezien gans het verhaal rond haar ontwikkeling gaat en haar groeiend besef over de wereld waarin ze leeft.
Het feit dat ik het audioboek zo goed als in één keer uitlas spreekt boekdelen over mijn intrige. Ik zal niet lang wachten om boek 2 te lezen, gezien de cliffhanger het enorm spannend maakt.
🎧 Willingham, Stacy – A Flicker in the Dark ★★★
Genre: Thriller
Now 20 years later, Chloe is a psychologist in private practice in Baton Rouge and getting ready for her wedding. She finally has a fragile grasp on the happiness she’s worked so hard to get. Sometimes, though, she feels as out of control of her own life as the troubled teens who are her patients. And then a local teenage girl goes missing, and then another, and that terrifying summer comes crashing back. Is she paranoid, and seeing parallels that aren’t really there, or for the second time in her life, is she about to unmask a killer?
Voorspelbare, maar entertainende thriller.
Ook al was van in het begin vrij duidelijk hoe de vork in de steel zat, het verhaal verveelde mij toch geen moment en wist me toch op een paar punten te verrassen. Solide debuut dus en ik hou deze auteur in de gaten.
Hart, Rob – The Paradox Hotel ★★
Genre: Sci-Fi

Not that running security at the Paradox was ever really easy. Nothing’s simple at a hotel where the ultra-wealthy tourists arrive costumed for a dozen different time periods, all eagerly waiting to catch their “flights” to the past.
Or where proximity to the timeport makes the clocks run backward on occasion—and, rumor has it, allows ghosts to stroll the halls.
None of that compares to the corpse in room 526. The one that seems to be both there and not there. The one that somehow only January can see.
On top of that, some very important new guests have just checked in. Because the U.S. government is about to privatize time-travel technology—and the world’s most powerful people are on hand to stake their claims.
January is sure the timing isn’t a coincidence. Neither are those “accidents” that start stalking their bidders.
There’s a reason January can glimpse what others can’t. A reason why she’s the only one who can catch a killer who’s operating invisibly and in plain sight, all at once.
But her ability is also destroying her grip on reality—and as her past, present, and future collide, she finds herself confronting not just the hotel’s dark secrets but her own.
Ergens halverwege verloor ik mijn interesse in het verhaal en las ik zo maar eventjes twee andere boeken tussendoor. Nochtans was de premisse uitermate intrigerend – een hotel waar ultra-rijke toeristen gekostumeerd arriveren voor hun vlucht naar het verleden, waar de tijd plots niet meer loopt zoals het hoort en waar de hoofd van tijdbeveiliging dingen begint te zien die er niet zijn.
Op zich had gans dit boek dus tonnen interessante ideeën, maar zo las het boek helaas ook, als een hoop losstaande ideeën die nooit echt een geheel vormen. De schrijfstijl is bovendien ook verwarrend en onnodig onduidelijk. Ondanks het feit dat er op een bepaald moment dinosaurussen rondlopen in het hotel, verveelde ik me vooral tijdens het lezen en betrapte ik mezelf meermaals op het diagonaal lezen. Ik heb mezelf echt gedwongen het boek uit te lezen, omdat ik toch nog hoopte op een bevredigend einde, maar helaas.
🎧 Bray, Libba – Before the Devil Breaks You (The Diviners #3) ★★★★★
Genre: Fantasy
1927.

Deze serie blijft ongelofelijke verhalen afleveren en de kwaliteit van het audioboek was opnieuw van de bovenste plank.

Dit is boek 3 van 4 en we beginnen meer en meer de mysteries van de vorige boeken te ontrafelen. Het aantal verschillende plots en subplots dat in dit boek de revue passeert, zonder overbodig te zijn of onbevredigend afgehandeld te worden, is indrukwekkend.
Alle personages krijgen elk hun spotlicht moment dat niet alleen bijdraagt aan het hoofdplot, maar ook aan de ontwikkeling van hun identiteit.
Eerder sprak ik al over hoe heerlijk griezelig deze serie is, en dit is in deze aflevering zeker en vast ook het geval, maar de menselijke interacties en de romances geeft dit alles de nodige luchtigheid en schattigheid.
“We are the Forgotten, forgotten no more.”
De inzet is hoger, evenals de risico’s, wat alleen betekent dat de gevolgen in verschillende gevallen buitengewoon hartverscheurend zijn. Dit boek brak mijn hart toch wel een paar keer, maar deed me ook glimlachen en grinniken.

Ik ben echt helemaal verliefd op deze serie, die absoluut zijn weg heeft gevonden naar één van mijn favorieten aller tijden.
DNF Blake, Olivie – The Atlas Six (The Atlas #1) DNF
Genre: Fantasy
– Libby Rhodes and Nicolás Ferrer de Varona: inseparable enemies, cosmologists who can control matter with their minds.
– Reina Mori: a naturalist who can speak the language of life itself.
– Parisa Kamali: a mind reader whose powers of seduction are unmatched.
– Tristan Caine: the son of a crime kingpin who can see the secrets of the universe.
– Callum Nova: an insanely rich pretty boy who could bring about the end of the world. He need only ask.
When the candidates are recruited by the mysterious Atlas Blakely, they are told they must spend one year together to qualify for initiation. During this time, they will be permitted access to the Society’s archives and judged on their contributions to arcane areas of knowledge. Five, they are told, will be initiated. One will be eliminated. If they can prove themselves to be the best, they will survive. Most of them.
Ik blijf het balen vinden dat dit boek me totaal niet kon bekoren. Ik had er zelfs zo veel moeite mee, dat ik met pijn in het hart besloot het halverwege op te geven.
Mijn gedetailleerde gedachten en mening kon je eerder al hier lezen.
Dare, Tessa – A Lady of Persuasion (The Wanton Dairymaid Trilogy #3) ★
Genre: Romantiek
Isabel is determined to marry a wealthy, powerful lord and become a lady of influence, using her rank and fortune to fight social injustice. Sir Toby, with his paltry title and infamous reputation, is unsuitable husband material—but he makes her blood race, her heart pound, and her long-buried passions come to the surface. Jezus, wat een irritant mens, die Isabella. Zo heiliger als de paus willen doen. Toby is al niet veel beter. En zo’n instalove ook, pff
Ik was meer geïnteresseerd in het verhaal van de nevenpersonages Joss & Hetta dan dat van het hoofdkoppel.
Tessa Dare stelt toch teleur met deze. Pluspunt is dat ik nog een serie op mijn lijst mag afvinken!
🎧 Ahern, Cecelia – Perfect (Flawed #2) ★★★
Genre: Sci-Fi

But Celestine has a secret—one that could bring the entire Flawed system crumbling to the ground. A secret that has already caused countless people to go missing.

Het vervolg op Flawed en tegelijk de afsluiter van de duologie stelde niet teleur.
Was het voorspelbaar? Tuurlijk wel, maar dat neemt niet weg dat ik het boek meeslepend en spannend vond.
Vermoedelijk had ik hier minder van genoten als ik deze serie in dezelfde periode als pakweg The Hunger Games of Divergent had gelezen, gezien de formule van de YA-dystopie hier ook wel hard werd gevolgd en het dus eigenlijk zo goed als hetzelfde verhaal is, maar dan anders.
Dat terzijde genoot ik vooral van de vlotte schrijfstijl, de intensiteit en bochtigheid van de plot en de als echt aanvoelende personages.
Henry, Emily – Book Lovers ★★★★
Genre: Romantiek
Nora Stephens’ life is books—she’s read them all—and she is not that type of heroine. Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby.
Which is why she agrees to go to Sunshine Falls, North Carolina for the month of August when Libby begs her for a sisters’ trip away—with visions of a small-town transformation for Nora, who she’s convinced needs to become the heroine in her own story. But instead of picnics in meadows, or run-ins with a handsome country doctor or bulging-forearmed bartender, Nora keeps bumping into Charlie Lastra, a bookish brooding editor from back in the city. It would be a meet-cute if not for the fact that they’ve met many times and it’s never been cute.
If Nora knows she’s not an ideal heroine, Charlie knows he’s nobody’s hero, but as they are thrown together again and again—in a series of coincidences no editor worth their salt would allow—what they discover might just unravel the carefully crafted stories they’ve written about themselves.
Het wordt een beetje een traditie dat ik in juni een hedendaagse romance van Emily Henry lees.
Na Beach Read in 2020 en People We Meet on Vacation in 2021, is het in 2022 de beurt aan deze Book Lovers en wat een heerlijk boek was me dat! Absoluut mijn favoriet van de drie!
“Is there anything better than iced coffee and a bookstore on a sunny day? I mean, aside from hot coffee and a bookstore on a rainy day.”
Ik vond het geweldig hoe de auteur op zo’n meta-manier speelde met de typische tropen van het romantische boek, terwijl haar verhaal tegelijkertijd stevig verankerd is in de realiteit.
Haar personages en hun relaties zijn zo geloofwaardig en treffend. Ze wist de meest fantastische connectie tussen de twee hoofdpersonages op te bouwen, met zowel overtuigende mentale als fysieke chemie. Ik was dol op zowel hun diepgaande gesprekken, als hun geplaag en geflirt.
“Does anyone ever want to finish a good book?”
Alleen voor het einde voelde het alsof de auteur niet helemaal goed wist hoe ze wilde afsluiten of vooral dat ze niet op de meest cliché manier wou afsluiten. Uiteindelijk was het voor mijn smaak toch net een beetje te abrupt en vaag.
Maar verder van de rest een geweldig zomervakantie-boek!

Hawkins, Scott – The Library at Mount Char ★★
Genre: Fantasy

Dit was ongetwijfeld één van de meest bizarre boeken dat ik ooit heb gelezen.
Het was meeslepend en vlot genoeg geschreven dat ik geen moment heb gedacht om het boek op te geven, maar ik heb eigenlijk nog steeds geen idee wat ik nu eigenlijk precies heb gelezen.
Het boek was een mix van fantasie en horror van de wrede en bloederige soort. De gemakkelijkste beschrijving is dat het over een eeuwenoude almachtige gaat die twaalf gewone mensenkinderen adopteert en elk van hen een deeltje van zijn macht aanleert, maar dit is slechts het oppervlakkige uitgangspunt van dit boek.
In ieder geval vond ik deze aanleiding bijzonder intrigerend en het boek wist me ook te boeien, ook al was ik het merendeel van de tijd in de war, maar na het lezen van de laatste pagina bleef ik toch wat gefrustreerd achter.
De auteur had heel veel leuke en originele ideeën, maar ook heel veel blijft onduidelijk en vaag. Op het einde blijven er zoveel vragen over, dat het gewoon teleurstellend is.
Dus dit was een boek dat ik eigenlijk wel graag heb gelezen, waar ik blijf over nadenken, maar hoe meer ik erover nadenk, hoe meer problemen ik heb en gaten ik vind in verschillende concepten en ideeën.
Oh, Axie – The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea ★★
Genre: Fantasy

But she doesn’t have much time: a human cannot live long in the land of the spirits. And there are those who would do anything to keep the Sea God from waking…
Op zich geen slecht verhaal, maar er mankeerde iets aan de schrijfstijl.
Het was nogal gevoelloos en hakkelig, waardoor ik totaal geen verbinding voelde met de personages of de plot. Dat laatste leunt ook te veel op toeval en gemak. En de obligate romance is extreem onderontwikkeld en gehaast.
Kortom, ik had hier meer van verwacht.
