Zoals jullie hier al een beetje konden lezen was november activiteitengewijs een goed gevulde maand. Dit had dan weer als gevolg dat het lezen ietwat meer op de achtergrond kwam en dat november dus uiteindelijk de maand met het minst uitgelezen boeken van 2021 tot nu toe werd. Niet zo verwonderlijk als ik ook samentel dat ik in november slechts 16 dagen op 30 met mijn neus in een boek zat.
Zo strandde ik voor november op 3 boeken, goed voor 1060 bladzijden. Gemiddeld komt dit neer op 353 blz/boek.
Hiervan las ik 1 boek uit de boekenkast, 1 boek op de e-reader en 1 via audioboek.

Voor de doelgroep van de uitgelezen boeken, las ik 1 Young-Adult boek en 2 volwassen boeken.
Voor de taal bleef ik weer bij het vertrouwde, want ik las namelijk enkel boeken in het Engels.
Drie boeken gelezen en dat ook in 3 verschillende genres, namelijk fantasy (1), horror (1) en romantiek (1).

Gevoelsmatig werd november een doorsnee maand, met een gemiddelde waardering van kop 3 sterretjes.

Normaal ben ik keihard fan van sfeervolle verhalen, maar dit boek was naar mijn smaak te atmosferisch. Het kwam eerder pretentieus dan transporterend over. Alles werd met weliswaar sierlijke zinnen beschreven, maar in plaats dat het me hielp te verdwijnen in de tekst, werd ik er rusteloos en ambetant van.
En dan zijn er nog de buitensporige hoeveelheid aan metaforen en vergelijkingen, die met mate kunnen helpen de juiste toon te zetten, maar hier werd alles zodanig uitgesponnen tot ellenlange paragrafen met beeldspraak, dat het mij vermoeide.

Het verhaal zelf sleepte zich bijgevolg tergend langzaam voort op deze omslachtige stijl, maar was inhoudelijk nogal kaal en voorspelbaar. Er was nochtans genoeg afleiding door alle metaforen, maar het lag er wat te vingerdik op, waardoor ik al vanaf het eerste moment had geraden hoe de vork aan de steel zat. Neem daarbij nog het instalove element en het feit dat het titulaire WINTERWOOD slechts een minimale cameo maakte, en ik bleef voornamelijk met een teleurgesteld gevoel achter na het uitlezen van dit boek.

Dit boek was tegelijkertijd ongemakkelijk eigenaardig en absurd grappig. De schrijfstijl vond ik innemend en de personages charmant. De plot deed me met momenten aan “Stranger Things” denken, maar dan met volwassenen en soms wel heel verontrustende beelden en ideeën.
Gaf me zeker en vast goesting om meer van deze auteur te lezen. En ook, herinnering aan mezelf om “The Willows” door Algernon Blackwood via Project gütenberg eens te lezen, want dit was wat dit boek heeft geïnspireerd.

Mijn verwachtingen voor deze waren dat ik er evenveel of zelfs meer van zou genieten dan van Spoiler Alert, maar helaas werden deze verwachtingen niet ingelost. Het was nog steeds een leuke en ontspannend boek, maar mij ontbrak ergens wat verbinding. Beide personages vond ik afzonderlijk fantastisch, maar ik vond hun connectie vaak ongeloofwaardig. Misschien doordat er gekozen werd om veel van de opbouw achter de schermen te laten plaats vinden, waardoor we als lezer plots in een situatie zaten waar de personages elkaar al maanden kennen. In ieder geval, ik miste opbouw en chemie, maar het boek slaagde er uiteindelijk toch wel in om mij een paar uur escapisme te bezorgen.
