Gelezen in november 2022
November was een drukke maand en daardoor gefractioneerde leesmaand, maar toch las ik aardig wat. Niet zozeer de boeken die ik op mijn TBR gezet had voor die maand, of toch niet allemaal. Ik las wel mijn 100ste van het jaar uit en vervolledigde een favoriete serie!
In totaal las ik in november 7 boeken, goed voor 3140 bladzijden. Het gemiddelde november boek komt zo op 449 blz/boek, wat behoorlijk hoog is, zelfs het op één na hoogste gemiddelde aantal bladzijden van het jaar tot nu toe!
Het was ook een maand van vrij goeie beoordelingen. Geen enkel boek kreeg minder dan 3 sterretjes en ik gaf opnieuw een boek 5 sterren, het 12de boek van het jaar! Het gemiddelde boek van november komt hierbij op 3,7 sterretjes.
Qua doelgroep las ik voornamelijk in mijn eigen leeftijdsgroep, met name slechts 1 Young Adult boek en 6 volwassen boeken.
Zoals steeds varieerde ik ook in leeswijze, met 1 e-boek, 2 audioboeken, 1 geleend boeken en 3 boekenkast-boeken.
Voor de genres wisselde ik tussen 5 genres, namelijk strip/graphic novel (1), sci-fi (1), mysterie (1), horror (2) en fantasy (2).
Voor de taal bleef ik weer in het Engels hangen en las ik geen enkel boek in het Nederlands.

🎧 Chiang, Ted – Exhalation ★★★
Genre: Sci-Fi

Including stories being published for the first time as well as some of his rare and classic uncollected work, Exhalation is Ted Chiang at his best: profound, sympathetic—revelatory.
Exhalation is een verzameling kortverhalen van Ted Chiang dat ik beginnen luisteren ben, omdat ik dacht dat daar ook “Arrival” in stond, dat de gelijknamige film heeft geïnspireerd, maar ik was fout, lol
Desalniettemin een heel interessante collectie, die toch wel een paar keer tot nadenken stemt en een paar schokmomentjes bezorgde. Het heeft een heel hoog Black Mirror gehalte, in de zin dat het vaak voort borduurt op gebeurtenissen die zouden kunnen gebeuren als we zo verder doen. Een paar verhalen lagen mij minder, maar al bij al fijne lectuur.
Cleese, W.M. – The Haunting of Las Lágrimas ★★★
Genre: Horror
Ursula Kelp, a young English gardener, travels to Buenos Aires to take up the role of head gardener at a long-abandoned estate in the Pampas. The current owner wishes to return to the estate with his family and restore the once-famous gardens to their former glory.
Travelling deep into the Pampas, the vast grasslands of South America, Ursula arrives to warnings from the locals that the estate is haunted, cursed to bring tragedy to the founding family of Las Lágrimas. And soon Ursula believes that her loneliness is making her imagine things – the sound of footsteps outside her bedroom door, the touch of hands on her shoulders when there’s no one there. Most strangely of all, she keeps hearing the frenzied sound of a man chopping down trees in the nearby forest with an axe, when all her staff are in sight.
As the strange occurrences intensify – with tragic consequences – Ursula questions if there’s truth in the rumours about the cursed estate. The family’s return is imminent – are they in danger? And the longer Ursula stays at the estate, the more she realises that she too is in mortal danger.
Heel sfeervol, griezelig en benauwend.
Begon sterk en bouwde langzaam een aanhoudend gevoel van onrust en angst op. Het was met momenten wel een beetje te langzaam, waardoor mijn aandacht wat verslapte, maar het verhaal slaagde er steeds in om mij opnieuw te grijpen.
Ik heb genoten van de schrijfstijl. Het voelde echt als een oudere gothic roman, terwijl het modern en toegankelijk genoeg bleef.
Het verhaal was boeiend, met voldoende verklaringen voor wat er gaande was.
Niet alles kreeg een duidelijke uitgespelde uitleg, maar niks waardoor ik op mijn honger bleef.
Over het algemeen heb ik erg genoten van deze gothic roman en ik ben benieuwd wat deze auteur hierna gaat produceren.
🎧 Kingfisher, T. – What Moves the Dead ★★★★
Genre: Horror
What they find there is a nightmare of fungal growths and possessed wildlife, surrounding a dark, pulsing lake. Madeline sleepwalks and speaks in strange voices at night, and her brother Roderick is consumed with a mysterious malady of the nerves.
Aided by a redoubtable British mycologist and a baffled American doctor, Alex must unravel the secret of the House of Usher before it consumes them all.

In theorie hou ik echt van het gothic genre, maar in de praktijk zijn er weinig boeken in dat genre waar ik echt van heb genoten. Meestal komt mijn ontgoocheling door het feit dat er zelden verklaringen worden gegeven aan de gebeurtenissen.
Het genre is vaak vooral vibes, een gemoedsinstelling, een duistere toon, een dreigend gevoel. Daartegenover staat dan vaak ook dat niks echt een reden of ontstaansgeschiedenis heeft, maar er gewoon is, puur en alleen om dat gevoel te creëren.
Als dit er bij jou ook voor zorgt dat je vaak op je honger blijft zitten bij een gothic roman, dan is dit boek echt wel het perfecte antwoord! Het is een hervertelling van Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher, maar dan met een soort van uitleg voor die val van het huis.
“No, you blithering idiot,” I growled, shaking his hand off. Damnable English language—more words than anybody can be expected to keep track of, and then they use the same one for about three different things. “I know she’s dead! I’m telling you, her body’s gone!”
“She’s not in the crypt. The slab is empty. We cannot habeas the corpus. Is any of this getting through?” (I was, perhaps, rather less reverent than the situation warranted, but it is a flaw of mine that I become sarcastic when I am frustrated.)
Bovendien slaagt Kingfisher erin om haar verhaal zowel de dreiging en sfeer van een typische gothic roman mee te geven, terwijl het ook nog eens grappig is op een droge, gevatte manier.

Smythe, Rachel – Lore Olympus: Volume Three (Lore Olympus #3) ★★★★

Galbraith, Robert – The Ink Black Heart (Cormoran Strike #6) ★★★★★
Genre: Mysterie
Robin decides that the agency can’t help with this—and thinks nothing more of it until a few days later, when she reads the shocking news that Edie has been tasered and then murdered in Highgate Cemetery, the location of The Ink Black Heart.
Robin and her business partner, Cormoran Strike, become drawn into the quest to uncover Anomie’s true identity. Wauw, opnieuw vanaf pagina 1 volledig mee gezogen. Er zijn weinig auteurs die erin slagen een boek van over de 1000 bladzijden te schrijven, zonder dat er ook maar één pagina als te veel aanvoelt. Heel meeslepend, spannend en onverwacht.
Enig punt van kritiek is dat de chat conversaties niet gemakkelijk te lezen zijn op een e-reader, maar dit loste ik op door daarvoor het audioboek in te schakelen.
De nieuwe personages voor dit verhaal zijn elk heel genuanceerd en interessant, maar Strike en Robin blijven het hart ♥.
Marillier, Juliet – Den of Wolves (Blackthorn & Grimm #3) ★★★★
Genre: Fantasy
Healer Blackthorn knows all too well the rules of her bond to the fey: seek no vengeance, help any who ask, do only good. But after the recent ordeal she and her companion, Grim, have suffered, she knows she cannot let go of her quest to bring justice to the man who ruined her life.
Despite her personal struggles, Blackthorn agrees to help the princess of Dalriada in taking care of a troubled young girl who has recently been brought to court, while Grim is sent to the girl’s home at Wolf Glen to aid her wealthy father with a strange task—repairing a broken-down house deep in the woods. It doesn’t take Grim long to realize that everything in Wolf Glen is not as it seems—the place is full of perilous secrets and deadly lies…

The forest knew everything. News passed on a breath of wind, in the call of an owl, in the small pattern of a squirrel’s paw prints. The trout in the stream learned it. The lark soaring high above saw it. The knowledge was in the hearts of the trees and in the mysterious rustling of their leaves. It was a deep-down wisdom, as solemn as a druid’s prayer.
Als ik spreek over gezellige fantasy, dan is dit het allerbeste wat dit subgenre te bieden heeft. Ik hou zo veel van Marilliers schrijfstijl en hoe ze een sfeer van sprookjesachtige verwondering weet te creëren.
When you felt sad or angry or hopeless, a story could help. A story could lead you into a different world for a while.
Dit laatste deel (boehoe) van Blackthorn en Grimms verhaal was alles wat ik ervan wilde, terwijl ik tegelijk ook niet wou dat het gedaan was.
In Den of Wolves krijgen we opnieuw een wonderlijk mysterie voorgeschoteld, waarvan de contouren vrij eenvoudig te raden zijn, maar dat er toch in slaagt om uniek, verrassend en meeslepend te zijn. Mijn favoriet van de drie blijft Tower of Thorns, door de veel nauwere betrokkenheid van onze hoofdpersonages, waardoor het ook een pak emotioneel geladener was, maar elk boek in deze serie brengt dezelfde tevredenheid wanneer alle puzzelstukjes prachtig in elkaar klikken.
‘I’ll go on any path you want,’ Grim said. ‘Might give you a push sometimes, keep you walking straight. But whatever happens, I’ll be right there beside you. Rain or shine. Shadows or light. Step for step. Always.’
♥ Blackthorn & Grimm, oh wat heb ik graag over hen gelezen. Hun aangrijpend begin, hun meeslepende reis en oh zo ontroerend einde. Een einde dat perfect is in al zijn stille kameraadschap en liefde.
Atwater, Olivia – Half a Soul (Regency Faerie Tales #1) ★★★
Genre: Fantasy
Ever since she was cursed by a faerie, Theodora Ettings has had no sense of fear or embarrassment – a condition which makes her prone to accidental scandal. Dit was lief. Anders dan verwacht en niet zo absorberend als verhoopt, maar leuk, uniek en lief. Zal de andere delen in deze wereld ook wel nog eens lezen, maar de dringendheid is er wel van af.
