In juli begon het al wat beter te gaan met het lezen. Nog niet helemaal zoals het was, maar er zit zeker verbetering in!

In juli las ik in totaal 11 boeken, goed voor 3571 bladzijden. Het gemiddelde juli boek komt zo op 325 blz/boek.

De sterretjes schommelden tussen 2 en 4, met voornamelijk 3-sterren boeken. Hierdoor komt het gemiddelde boek van juli op 3,2 sterretjes.

Qua doelgroep wisselde ik af tussen 2 Young Adult boeken en 9 volwassen boeken.

Zoals steeds varieerde ik ook in leeswijze, met 1 e-boek, 3 audioboeken en 7 boekenkast-boeken.

Voor de genres wisselde ik tussen 3 genres, namelijk horror (1), sci-fi (5) en fantasy (5).

Zoals ondertussen gebruikelijk is, las ik alleen maar in het Engels.

Gelezen dankzij Jole, die het me aanraadde voor de opdracht “Recommended by a Friend” in Adventure in Aeldia.

Dit boek was een onverwacht plezier! Ik was vooral gefascineerd door het unieke magiesysteem, waarbij heksen hun kracht ontlenen aan de elementen en seizoenen; en de incorporatie van klimaatverandering en hoe dit het leven van de heksen en hun magiegebruik beïnvloedt. Deze vindingrijke aanpak voegde een extra diepte toe aan het verhaal, waardoor het zowel actueel als magisch aanvoelde. De toevoeging van een magische schoolomgeving was de kers op de taart en gaf het net die extra charme.

Ik waardeerde ook de manier waarop het verhaal rond de veranderende seizoenen was gestructureerd. Elk seizoen had zijn eigen sfeer en Rachel Griffin leverde fantastisch werk met overbrengen van het gevoel en de stemming van elk seizoen.

Hoewel de plot een vrij klassiek YA-verhaal omvat – een coming-of-age-verhaal met een ‘uitverkorene’ thema – blinkt het uit door zijn structuur en zijn boeiende magiesysteem.
Over het geheel genomen levert The Nature of Witches een verfrissende en plezierige draai aan bekende thema’s.

Jensen, Danielle L. – A Fate Inked in Blood (Saga of the Unfated #1) ★★★

A Fate Inked in Blood van Danielle L. Jensen begint met een intrigerend uitgangspunt dat een aangrijpende mix van Noorse mythologie, avontuur en romantiek belooft. Hoewel de roman een sterk begin kende, voldeed hij uiteindelijk niet aan de verwachtingen, waardoor ik met gemengde gevoelens achterbleef.

Een van de grootste problemen die ik had met het boek was het gebrek aan diepgang in de personages. Zelfs onze hoofdpersonen, Freya en Bjorn, voelden onderontwikkeld. Vooral Freya was frustrerend om te volgen. Haar neiging om impulsief te handelen en vaak overhaaste conclusies te trekken zonder er goed over na te denken, was een terugkerend probleem. Ik begrijp dat dit deels bedoeld is om haar dubbele aard te benadrukken – verscheurd tussen menselijke emoties en de roeping van het lot – maar het werd eerder een ergernis dan een boeiende karakterfout. Het was moeilijk om met haar mee te leven of voor haar te juichen, aangezien ze voortdurend overhaaste beslissingen nam die makkelijk vermeden hadden kunnen worden met wat meer nadenken.

De romantiek, die een centraal element van het verhaal zou moeten zijn, kwam voor mij ook niet echt over. Hoewel er momenten van spanning en chemie waren tussen Freya en Bjorn, voelde ik nooit echt hun connectie. Het leek meer op een plotnoodzaak dan op een natuurlijk ontwikkelende relatie, waardoor de romantische elementen hol en niet overtuigend aanvoelden.

Over het algemeen was A Fate Inked in Blood gewoon oké. Het was geen slecht boek, maar het liet ook geen blijvende indruk achter. Ondanks mijn bedenkingen wekte de richting van het einde echter mijn nieuwsgierigheid genoeg om te overwegen om het vervolg op te pakken. Ik hoop dat het volgende deel voor meer karakterontwikkeling en een sterker verhaal zal zorgen, passend bij het potentieel waarmee dit boek begon.

This Golden Flame van Emily Victoria stond al jaren op mijn plank sinds ik hem voor het eerst ontving in een Fairyloot-doos. Toen ik het eindelijk oppakte, vond ik het een eenvoudig YA-fantasie-mysterie met een intrigerend uitgangspunt en lovenswaardige wereldopbouw.

Een van de opvallende aspecten van het boek is hoe de auteur zo’n gedetailleerde en meeslepende wereld in één enkele roman heeft gecreëerd – geen geringe prestatie in het genre. Ondanks de complexiteit van de setting voelde de plot zelf echter iets te simpel aan naar mijn smaak. Hoewel het verhaal gemakkelijk te volgen is, vond ik dat het de diepgang en uitdaging ontbeerde die nodig zijn om mij echt te boeien of een blijvende impact achter te laten. Hoewel het leuk was, voldeed het uiteindelijk niet helemaal aan de eisen wat betreft narratieve complexiteit.

Wells, Martha – All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries #1) ★★★

Genre: Sci-Fi

“As a heartless killing machine, I was a complete failure.”

In a corporate-dominated space-faring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. For their own safety, exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern.

On a distant planet, a team of scientists is conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid–a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, Murderbot wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is, but when a neighboring mission goes dark, it’s up to the scientists and Murderbot to get to the truth.

Terwijl ik naar het volgende boek in de FirstLaw World luisterde, wilde ik nog steeds iets met mijn ogen lezen, maar dan iets luchtiger. Ik had ook voor een romance of mysterie kunnen gaan, maar ik had meer zin om sciencefiction te lezen en omdat ik Murderbot steeds weer wil oppakken, besloot ik de eerste twee novelles opnieuw te lezen, te beginnen met deze.

Ik was verrast om te ontdekken dat ik me de meeste details van deze nog steeds kon herinneren. Ik heb het boek opnieuw gelezen omdat ik me het verhaal niet echt kon herinneren, maar tijdens het lezen kwam alles weer in mijn hoofd op en verrassend genoeg ook heel levendig.

Ik heb het gevoel dat ik deze novelle deze keer meer met smaak heb gelezen dan de eerste keer, maar ik ben er nog steeds niet zo dol op als velen lijken te zijn. Ik vind de ideeën en het personage van Murderbot echt geweldig, maar ik ben over het algemeen geen fan van de schrijfstijl.

Wells, Martha – Artificial Condition (The Murderbot Diaries #2) ★★★

Genre: Sci-Fi

A past that caused it to christen itself “Murderbot.” But it has only vague memories of the massacre that spawned that title, and it wants to know more. Teaming up with a Research Transport vessel named ART (you don’t want to know what the “A” stands for), Murderbot heads to the mining facility where it went rogue. What it discovers will forever change the way it thinks.

Verder lezend in Murderbot en ook deze heb ik liever gelezen dan wanneer ik hem voor het eerst las. Vooral ART sprong meer in het oog.
Ik vind de schrijfstijl nog steeds behoorlijk onprettig, maar ik heb het meer kunnen waarderen door in gedachten te houden dat dit het dagboek van Murderbot zou moeten zijn. Dit hielp me om weg te kunnen zinken in het langdradige schrijven, hoewel het nog steeds niet echt verklaard waarom iemand zoveel dingen specifiek zou uitleggen als het effectief een dagboek was…

Wells, Martha – Rogue Protocol (The Murderbot Diaries #3) ★★★

Nog een aflevering van Murderbot die zwakke mensen verzamelt om te beschermen, ondanks dat het niet langer hun taak is en ze er heftig op staan dat het hun allemaal NIKS kan schelen.
Ik vond het geweldig om de interacties tussen Miki en Murderbot te lezen, en het onvermogen van de laatste om wat ze voelden te benoemen (jaloers, Murderbot was jaloers).

🎧 Abercrombie, Joe – The Trouble With Peace (First Law World #9) ★★★★

Genre: (Grimdark) Fantasy

Murderbot wasn’t programmed to care. So, its decision to help the only human who ever showed it respect must be a system glitch, right?

Having traveled the width of the galaxy to unearth details of its own murderous transgressions, as well as those of the GrayCris Corporation, Murderbot is heading home to help Dr. Mensah—its former owner (protector? friend?)—submit evidence that could prevent GrayCris from destroying more colonists in its never-ending quest for profit.

But who’s going to believe a SecUnit gone rogue?

And what will become of it when it’s caught?

Dit is de laatste van de vier overkoepelende Murderbot-novelles, die het verhaal van de eerste afrondt. Nu ik deze vier novelles achter elkaar heb gelezen, vond ik de verhaallijn en karakterisering leuker dan voorheen.
Mijn mening over de schrijfstijl is echter niet echt veranderd, maar ik ben er wel aan gewend geraakt, vooral omdat ik het personage Murderbot steeds leuker begon te vinden, vooral hun grimmige gevoel voor humor.
Als je ze achter elkaar leest, merk je echter wel dat deze novelles qua plot behoorlijk op elkaar lijken: Murderbot wil series kijken, maar raakt afgeleid door de noodzaak om domme mensen te redden en doet alsof hij absoluut geen gevoelens heeft voor genoemde mensen (of voor de kunstmatige “staf” die hij onderweg tegenkomt).
Uiteindelijk geen super bijzondere verhalen, maar ze lezen relatief snel en zijn leuk voor tussendoor.
Ik ben benieuwd naar de volledige roman, dus die ga ik waarschijnlijk binnenkort lezen.

Wells, Martha – Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory (The Murderbot Diaries #4,5) ★★★

Een kort bonusverhaaltje, voor een keer niet vanuit het perspectief van Murderbot, maar vanuit het perspectief van een van zijn mensen. Leuk om te lezen, maar niet super essentieel.

🎧 Tremblay, Paul – Horror Movie ★★★★

A chilling twist on the “cursed film” genre.

Horror Movie is an obsessive, psychologically chilling, and suspenseful twist on the “cursed film” that breathlessly builds to an unforgettable, mind-bending conclusion.

Ik heb dit boek gelezen als een audioboek met volledige cast, beschikbaar op Storytel, en voordat ik begin met het daadwerkelijk beoordelen van de inhoud van het verhaal, wil ik even snel iets zeggen over deze productie. Ik weet niet of Storytel een verkeerd bestand heeft gekregen of zoiets, maar dit bevatte zoveel fouten. Meerdere keren stonden er fouten en meerdere heropnames in het bestand, er was zelfs een gedeelte waarin een van de stemacteurs en de technicus uitgebreid discussieerden over hoe een woord/zin moest worden uitgesproken. Er waren ook geluidseffecten, maar door de fouten vraag ik me af of deze opzettelijk waren of niet.

Ondanks dat deze fouten me vaak uit het verhaal haalden, vond ik het erg moeilijk om dit boek weg te leggen. Extreem meeslepend, maar ook erg verontrustend. Ik weet nog steeds niet wat ik van het einde vind, maar feit blijft dat ik de beelden en emoties die werden opgeroepen door de uitstekende schrijfstijl nog steeds levendig kan oproepen.
