Fairyloot Adult #26: April 2024

I experienced some hiccups with my Fairyloot Adult box from April. Although my box was delivered in late April, I quickly discovered that my book had some unsightly damage that I was not willing to accept. Fortunately, Fairyloot is very correct when it comes to these types of issues and they quickly offered to send me a replacement copy. It obviously took a little longer before it was delivered to me, fortunately this time without damage.

April’s theme was The Occult and although Fairyloot didn’t reveal which book it was going to be, the speculations were all pretty unanimous.

And that unanimity was that it was indeed Evocation by S.T. Gibson!

The Devil knows your name, David Aristarkhov.

As a teen, David Aristarkhov was a psychic prodigy, operating under the shadow of his oppressive occultist father. Now, years after his father’s death and rapidly approaching his thirtieth birthday, he is content with the high-powered life he’s curated as a Boston attorney, moonlighting as a powerful medium for his secret society.

But with power comes a price, and the Devil has come to collect on an ancestral deal. David’s days are numbered, and death looms at his door.

Reluctantly, he reaches out to the only person he’s ever trusted, his ex-boyfriend and secret Society rival Rhys, for help. However, the only way to get to Rhys is through his wife, Moira. Thrust into each other’s care, emotions once buried deep resurface, and the trio race to figure out their feelings for one another before the Devil steals David away for good…

The first book in a spellbinding and vibrant new series from The Sunday Times bestselling author of A Dowry of Blood.

Now, personally, after reading A Dowry of Blood, I’m slightly more reserved towards the S.T. Gibson hype, because I didn’t think that book was all that great.
In terms of the images this synopsis conjures, this book appeals to me quite a bit, but time will tell whether I actually find it as lush as I would expect.

Fairyloot put in quite some effort forward the designing of this book.
The dust jacket has the same illustration as the standard edition, but completely in red and gold, instead of teal and silver. I’m a fan!
And as a surprise, Fairyloot also includes a completely unique illustrated cover on the back of the dust jacket, designed by @warickaart. Also beautiful, but I’m glad it’s on the back, because I think the standard version looks better.

Underneath the dust jacket, the colour scheme of red and gold is continued with a red hardcover and gold-coloured foil illustrations by @blanca.design

The book block is also sprayed with illustrations all around. At the front a multi-coloured devilish illustration, above and below a damask motif, which again reminds me of their edition for A Dowry of Blood.

The book is also signed by the author on a beautifully designed page in the book. There is also an art print with an author letter on the back.

Furthermore, the book comes with two illustrated endpapers by @warickaart, which completes the throw back to their edition of A Dowry of Blood, since she also provided the illustrations in that book.

It is with the endpapers where things went wrong for my edition. The front endpaper looked great, but the back cover showed damage, as if someone had gone over it with a utility knife and then folded and crumpled it a bit.
Not something one likes to see in a special edition book, so I’m glad that Fairyloot sent me a new copy without issues, this time with intact endpapers.

Now I do have two copies of this book, so it will be in an unhaul on Vinted one of these days!

Once again an impressively designed Fairyloot edition. Although I have become a little more reserved when it comes to this author, I cannot deny that this is a very nice addition to my bookshelf!

Cheers,
Charlotte
