The Broken Binding Sci-Fi Sub #5: August & October 2025

After two boxes featuring standalone novels in the The Broken Binding Sci-Fi subscription, it was announced that the next science fiction release would be a duology, and it just so happened to be one that’s been sitting on my TBR for five years!

The duology in question is The Sparrow Duology by Mary Doria Russell.

In 2019, humanity finally finds proof of extraterrestrial life when a listening post in Puerto Rico picks up exquisite singing from a planet that will come to be known as Rakhat. While United Nations diplomats endlessly debate a possible first contact mission, the Society of Jesus quietly organizes an eight-person scientific expedition of its own. What the Jesuits find is a world so beyond comprehension that it will lead them to question what it means to be “human”.

I first heard about this series through @BookswithEmilyFox on YouTube. I honestly couldn’t remember much about the story itself until I reread the blurb, but I did remember being absolutely intrigued after watching Emily’s reaction videos to these books, which prompted me to add these to my TBR.

As always, the books arrived securely packaged and beautifully wrapped. Boring photos, perhaps, but I still find the unboxing process such a joy. Even the extra sticker on the parcel feels so thoughtfully chosen. It’s those small details that make the experience so special.

Oh wow, what stunning illustrations by @pgm.99! The colours are gorgeous, and I love the dreamy quality of the artwork. The slightly soft, hazy lines give it such atmosphere. This illustrator also worked on the Rook & Rose series for the fantasy subscription, and yes, I’m definitely a fan.

The foil designs on the naked hardcovers were created by @claymorecovers, and they’re absolutely lovely. Both books complement each other beautifully, and I really appreciate that the back covers feature quotes instead of artwork. The chosen lines immediately pique my curiosity more about the story.

The colour palette for these editions is just exquisite. Rich, cohesive, and perfectly chosen. The sprayed edges really highlight that.

The endpapers were illustrated by Danil Luzin, and wow, what a surprise! Those large feline creatures instantly reminded me of the Catkind from Doctor Who. Totally unexpected based on the synopsis, but absolutely fascinating.

Another surprise came when I discovered that both books were signed! That’s not guaranteed with this sci-fi subscription, so it’s such a delightful bonus.

Once again, a truly stunning set. A perfect blend of vivid colour, striking design, and cohesive luxury. These editions make me even more eager to finally dive into the duology. Hopefully owning them physically will stop me from letting them linger on my TBR for yet another five years!

The next and final sci-fi sub for 2025 will be another standalone: The Vanished Birds by Simon Jimenez.

Last year, I tried reading The Spear Cuts Through Water by the same author, which sent me straight into a major reading slump. So it wasn’t a difficult decision to contact The Broken Binding and skip this box. I’m sure it’ll be another beautiful edition, but knowing my experience with his writing, I doubt I’ll ever be in the mood to read it. Better to let this one pass me by.

I’m already curious to see what they have planned for 2026!

Cheers,
Charlotte
