Tinker Bell Dress

To celebrate the birth of my friend’s baby daughter, I once again felt the itch to make something.
Over the years, I’ve built up the habit of crocheting blankets as baby gifts, but funnily enough that didn’t even cross my mind this time. No, this time I wanted to knit a little dress.

It had been a while since I last knitted a dress, and the number of patterns I’ve collected over the years to “make someday” has become almost overwhelming. Still, I didn’t have to think long about which one to choose, because I already had the perfect yarn in the perfect colour waiting at home.

The pattern I chose is the Fairy Leaves Dress by Yarnspirations Design Studio. In the example it’s made in pink and beige, but to me it instantly looked like the perfect Tinker Bell dress if made in a fresh grass green. And that’s exactly what I made.

Luckily, I’ve taught myself the habit of always reading through a pattern before diving in. This can sometimes be a slightly annoying quirk, since I tend to overthink certain details, but in this case it was definitely worth it. I stumbled upon a few instructions that felt a bit “strange” to me. By working them out in advance, the actual knitting turned into a wonderfully relaxing experience.

For example, I joined the dress in the round on row 13 instead of row 12, so that the right side would be facing outwards. For the sleeves, I put the stitches on waste yarn by simply knitting one extra round, instead of just slipping them across needles. And to make the increases around the purl stitch in the skirt a little less visible, I used this method: knit until 1 stitch before the purl stitch, make 1 left, knit–purl–knit, make 1 right.

The little dress has already found its way to its new owner. She didn’t have much to say about it herself just yet, but fortunately her mum spoke clearly enough: admiring and happy. And that, to me, is the loveliest compliment of all.

Cheers,
Charlotte
