Reading in 2025: Planned Readathons and Book Clubs
There is a world of new vocabulary to be found online to make reading a more social activity. I discovered a few years ago that I am up for a reading challenge, and since then the so-called readathons with accompanying prompts have become a permanent fixture in my reading behaviour. I have also tried the occasional readalong and buddy read – which are essentially book clubs, where a group of people read and discuss the same book – which I always enjoyed, so I want to try to participate in that more. This is especially for books that are already on my TBR, to push me to finally pick them up, because it is an extra motivation if you can chat with people about your reading experience right away. To this end, I already have a few plans and wishes for 2025, which I would like to go over here.
Magical Readathon 2025
The readathon by @BookRoast that made my love for this concept blossom. I’ve been participating in the new Magical Readathon since it started in 2021, and with two months a year in which I dedicated the books I read to this readathon, I think it’s warranted to call it a tradition.
For those who don’t know what this is and are curious, check out this beginner’s guide.
But in short, the Magical Readathon is a two-part readathon of one month each (since last year the months of April and September), in which you guide a self-created character (D&D style) through their exams at the magical Orilium Academy. In addition to the reading assignments associated with these exams, there are also numerous side activities associated with this readthon, both in the months of the actual exams themselves, and in the other months.
One of these extra activities that I have consistently participated in since its inception two years ago, and for which 2025 will be no exception, is the Adventure in Aeldia.
This is a year-long choose-your-own-adventure style challenge where you guide your character along a self-chosen path through the map. Each month you choose the direction you want to go and then read a book based on the prompt you find in that direction. This year the map is much more extensive than previous years, which @BookRoast explains in great detail in this video.
The Fitzalong

I started this readalong of Robin Hobbs The Realm of the Elderlings last year, but I fell off track a bit due to my somewhat disillusioned feelings after finishing the first trilogy. I’m still interested in continuing the series, but I decided at that point to hit the pause button and take it a bit slower.
My only wish for this year is to start and finish The Liveship Traders, the second trilogy in this world.
The Faith Fall Along
For this new series readalong you could already read my first review. The #faithfallalong is the new focus for Becca’s Catch-up Bookclub, in which we will read all the books from John Gwynne’s Banished Lands World together. The proposed reading schedule is as follows, with a live show discussion provisionally scheduled for the second Sunday of the month after the book must be finished:
When to lezen? | Book |
---|---|
2024 NOV-DEC | Malice |
2025 JAN-FEB | Valour |
2025 MAR-APR | Ruin |
2025 MAY-JUN | Wrath |
2025 JUL-AUG | A Time of Dread |
2025 SEP-OKT | A Time of Blood |
2025 NOV-DEC | A Time of Courage |
Considering book 1 was a resounding success for me and I’m eager to dive into the next book, I will probably be able to follow allong with this schedule.
Order of the Fools x Sun Eater
I find Andrew Watson‘s Discord a fun place to hang out. It also has a reading club, where we read a book together every month. I have participated occasionally, if the book appealed to me and it suited me at that moment.
This year Andrew is organizing the reading club a little differently, by also incorporating a series readalong. The plan is to read a book from a selected series every two months, and to fill the other months with another voted in book. The series that won the vote for 2025 is The Sun Eater by Christopher Ruocchio, which is a mix of space opera and epic fantasy that is set 20,000 years in the future. I’ve heard so many great things about this series and couldn’t resist buying the special editions of The Broken Binding. So this book club comes at the perfect time to hold myself accountable for this crazy splurge based on the hype alone. The schedule for this is:
When to read? | Book |
---|---|
JAN | Empire of Silence |
MAR | Howling Dark |
MAY | Demon in White |
JULY | Kingdoms of Death |
SEPTEMBER | Ashes of Man |
NOVEMBER | Disquiet Gods |
Of course, this is the plan, but if it turns out that this series is not for me, then I will of course not force myself to keep reading. But at the moment that I write this, I have already read 40% of the first book and it is certainly a good start!
And for now, these are the concrete plans I have for 2025.
There is a chance that I will participate in more book clubs, since I am a member of a number of booktubers who do a monthly readalong, but this will depend on which book is selected. I will only consider participating if I already have the selected book on my bookshelf, and then only if it fits into my schedule at that time!
Are you part of a book club or do you ever participate in a readathon?
Cheers,
Charlotte
