Gelezen in maart 2022
Maart was de beste leesmaand van het jaar tot nu toe.
Ondanks het feit dat ik besloot één begonnen boek niet uit te lezen na er toch al een behoorlijk aantal pagina’s in te hebben gelezen, las ik toch nog 12 boeken uit voor een totaal van 4609 bladzijden. Het gemiddelde maart boek komt zo op 384 blz/boek uit.
Hoewel ik toch wel een paar heel leuke boeken heb gelezen afgelopen maand, kreeg geen enkele de volle 5-sterren op basis van mijn BALSPEL systeem. Aan de andere kant, ik las ook geen abominabel slechte boeken (1★), ook al DNF’te ik dus toch een boek. Alle uitgelezen boeken vallen zo in de middelste categorieën van OK (2★), leuk (3★) of geweldig (4★). Uiteindelijk komt zo het gemiddelde maart boek uit op een score van 3,2 sterretjes, opnieuw een vrij gemiddelde score dus.
De manier waarop ik boeken las was mooi evenredig verdeeld tussen boeken uit mijn boekenkast (4), boeken op mijn e-reader (4) en luisterboeken (4).
Qua doelgroep varieerde ik tussen 1 jeugdboek, 4 Young Adult boeken en 7 volwassen boeken.
In de genres bleef ik afwisselen en las ik zelfs voor het eerst sinds 2020 nog eens een non-fictie boek. In totaal las ik in 7 verschillende genres, namelijk romantiek (3), sci-fi (3), fantasy (2), mysterie (2), thriller (1) en non-fictie (1).
Leuk ook voor maart is dat ik 3 series heb voltooid, waarvan 2 die ik vroeger al was begonnen en eentje dat ik dit jaar voor het eerst heb opgepakt. Heel leuk om te kunnen afvinken!
Ook las ik in maart mijn eerste boek in het Nederlands! Hiermee las ik toch nog 11 boeken in het Engels, maar het is een begin.

Oooh, deze was goed!

Soms een beetje te puberaal naar mijn gevoel, vooral het constant grappig willen zijn. Het maakte me vooral nerveus, omdat ze niet meteen in een situatie zaten dat ze zich konden ontspannen en flirten, en ik dus vooral wou dat ze opschoten vooraleer iets ergs gebeurde. Aan de andere kant toont dit ook wel dat ik geïnvesteerd was in het verhaal en de personages.
Al met al weer een zeer meeslepend verhaal met enkele klassieke Sci-Fi tropen, dat op een unieke manier wordt verteld.
Het einde maakte me meer nieuwsgierig naar het vervolg dan het eerste boek, dus ik ga boek 3 niet te lang laten wachten!

Wederom een fantastische aflevering en een geweldige afsluiting van deze trilogie.
We krijgen nog meer nieuwe en meeslepende personages uit gothic-romans die mij bekend en onbekend zijn, terwijl we tegelijkertijd alle eerdere personages die vroeger aan ons werden geïntroduceerd, bijhielden. Er waren genoeg verrassingen en het plot was spannend, geestig en opwindend.
Finally, they realized they were the monsters.
Echter, het achter elkaar lezen van deze boeken was misschien niet de juiste keuze, aangezien het sommige grappen enigszins repetitief maakte en de intermezzo’s met het commentaar enigszins vervelend.
Het einde voelde op een bepaalde manier ook een beetje schokkerig en gehaast, terwijl het tegelijkertijd een klein stukje deur open hield voor mogelijke nieuwe avonturen in deze wereld? (vraagt ze hoopvol)
Maar dat zijn allemaal kleine dingen vergeleken met het leuke avontuur dat in dit slotboek wordt verteld.
Bromley, Kate – Talk Bookish to Me ★★

Ik heb precies nog geen chance gehad met de romantische verhalen dit jaar. Ik heb nog niet veel moeten zwijmelen en met deze was het dus ook niet het geval.
Ik hield wel van hoe zelfbewust het verhaal was en hoe er verwezen werd naar het romantische genre en hoe het werd uitgelegd.
Wat het verhaal en de romance zelf betreft, moest ik in het begin wel wat mijn weg zoeken, maar werd dan uiteindelijk toch helemaal naar binnen gezogen.
Ik werd echter al snel ongerust over het conflictgedeelte, omdat ik een voorgevoel had over wat het ging worden en ik een absolute hekel heb aan dit soorten verhalen.
Helaas, pindakaas. Ik kreeg gelijk, waardoor het verhaal voor mij onherstelbaar verpest was. Dubbel zo toen ik uiteindelijk las hoe de auteur de situatie oploste door bepaalde acties van bepaalde personages. Nope, neen, bedankt!
🎧 Jewell, Lisa – The Family Upstairs ★★★★
Genre: Mysterie

The can’t-look-away story of three entangled families living in a house with the darkest of secrets.
Dit boek vond ik echt heel leuk en meeslepend. Het is wel op meerdere vlakken onrealistisch, vooral het gedrag en de reacties van bepaalde personages, wat toch een beetje voor een valse noot zorgde.
Maar over het algemeen vond ik het verhaal geweldig en kon ik het moeilijk aan de kant leggen. De verschillende perspectieve waren intrigerend en dreven het verhaal vooruit. Ook de meeste plotwendingen waren onverwacht en spoorden aan om verder te lezen. Naar het einde toe nam het tempo echter af en het is ook daar dat de misleidingen een beetje te geforceerd werden of gewoon van tafel werden geveegd. Het einde viel een beetje plat en ik wou dat de auteur er iets meer had mee gedaan. En ook, wat is die titel? Toch beetje raar gekozen vind ik.

Genre: Young Adult Sci-Fi

Solide finale voor een spannende, originele serie.
Er wordt wel gebruik gemaakt van dezelfde soort formule, waardoor de verrassingen niet meer zo verbazingwekkend waren en eerder voorspelbaar. Desondanks een heel leuk boek met een bevredigende afsluiting.
Er is blijkbaar ook nog een novelle die zich meer focust op AIDAN, waar ik toch ook wel curieus naar ben, gezien AIDAN één van de meer intrigerende personages in de serie was voor mij!
🎧 Dawkins, Richard – The Greatest Show on Earth ★★★
Genre: Non-Fictie
In The Greatest Show on Earth Richard Dawkins takes on creationists, including followers of ‘Intelligent Design’ and all those who question the fact of evolution through natural selection. Like a detective arriving on the scene of a crime, he sifts through fascinating layers of scientific facts and disciplines to build a cast-iron case: from the living examples of natural selection in birds and insects; the ‘time clocks’ of trees and radioactive dating that calibrate a timescale for evolution; the fossil record and the traces of our earliest ancestors; to confirmation from molecular biology and genetics. All of this, and much more, bears witness to the truth of evolution.

Ik las dit boek als een combinatie van audioboek en e-boek, om volledig aandachtig mee te zijn en om de foto’s te kunnen bekijken waar nodig.
“Evolution is a fact. Beyond reasonable doubt, beyond serious doubt, beyond sane, informed, intelligent doubt, beyond doubt evolution is a fact.”
Heel welbespraakt, boeiend en duidelijk uitgelegd, maar ook nogal langdradig en soms liep de uiteenzetting wat verloren in de details en werd het wat te repetitief.
Doordat een groot deel van het boek voorgelezen wordt door de auteur, kwam zijn verontwaardiging, irritatie, frustratie en soms zelf woede aan het adres van creationisten en evolutieontkenners nog scherper door. Hoewel ik die scherpe kritieken vaak grappig vond en dus regelmatig zat te gniffelen, kan ik mij wel heel goed voorstellen dat dit eerder het omgekeerde effect heeft dan wat de auteur wil bereiken. Als hij met dit boek mensen wil overtuigen, dan vrees ik dat hij toch beter een andere, minder beledigende, strategie had gekozen.

Voor iemand die niet overtuigd moet worden van het feit van evolutie, dan is dit zeker een vermakelijk en informatief werk.

Myst, Magnus – Het Kleine Slechte Boek ★★★★
Genre: Fantasy
Dit boek lees je niet altijd keurig netjes op volgorde, maar kriskras door elkaar. Blader heen en weer tussen raadsels en grappige griezelverhalen. Een uniek avontuur in boekvorm. Zo wordt zelfs de grootste boekenhater fan!
Ik kocht dit boek vrij spontaan toen het mijn aandacht trok in Standaard Boekhandel. Leek me ideaal voor de verjaardag van mijn nichtje, maar ik wou het toch eerst even zelf lezen.
Heel leuk interactief boek voor kinderen, met het boek zelf als hoofdpersonage. Voor kindjes die graag lezen, maar ook minder graag, gezien het boek eerder aanvoelt als een spelletje of puzzel.
Robert, Katee – Electric Idol (Dark Olympus #2) ★★
Genre: Romantiek

Oef, weer beetgenomen door een hype. Ontgoochelend en vergeetbaar.
De wereld blijft, net als in Neon Gods, onderontwikkeld en vaag. Ik zou daar mee kunnen leven als de personages diepgang vertoonden, maar ook zij zijn triestig karikaturaal , waardoor ook de romance flauw en emotieloos las.
Heel veel tekst, saaie innerlijke dialogen, herhalingen, maar niks dat het verhaal emotie of realiteit geeft.
Het las vooral alsof een auteur van erotica fantasy-romance lezers wilde lokken, door te zinspelen op een dieper verhaal, maar er uiteindelijk niet in slaagde om enig aspect van het boek waar te maken, zelfs niet het erotische.
Hallett, Janice – The Appeal ★★★★

Heel slim en uniek opgebouwd. Spannend met meeslepende personages.
Twee juridische assistenten krijgen van hun baas een dossier vol e-mails en sms’jes voorgeschoteld zonder achtergrondinformatie, omdat hij wil dat ze alles met een open geest lezen in de hoop dat ze onafhankelijk tot een bepaalde conclusie zullen komen. Als lezer stappen we op dezelfde manier in het dossier, met af en toe een commentaar of een notitie van de meelezende juridische assistenten.
Door dit format leest het als een trein. Er zijn geen hoofdstukken, alleen bericht na bericht, waardoor het moeilijk weg te leggen is, gezien ik altijd slechts nog één berichtje wou lezen om het af te leren.
In eerste instantie leek de grote cast aan personages overweldigend, maar net doordat we ook regelmatig een samenvattende lijst te zien krijgen, bleef alles toch overzichtelijk.
Ik had wel vrij snel een vermoeden van wat er aan de hand was, maar de finale onthullingen waren toch verrassend.
Eén iets waar ik ook niet te veel bij stil mocht staan was het feit dat die mensen elkaar toch wel heel veel mailen en ook quasi onmiddellijk reactie kregen. Ik snap wel dat het e-mail formaat meer tekst toe laat om mee te werken voor dit boek, maar ik heb toch regelmatig gezegd “amai, die reageren rap” of “hoe raar dat ze daarvoor mailen”.
Maar goed, immens goed gevonden en een feestmaal voor mijn innerlijke detective! En dat einde was super creepy!

Deze prequel introduceert AIDAN en schijnt een licht op het ontwikkelen van hun denkproces. Ook al is het kort, het deelt behoorlijk wat klappen uit. Het was niet echt nodig, maar wel een leuk extraatje. Hiermee kan ik deze serie dan ook officieel als compleet afvinken.
Byrne, Kerrigan – The Devil in Her Bed (Devil You Know #3) ★★★
Genre: Historische romantiek

Het begin is weer karakteristiek voor Kerrigan Byrne en zorgde dat ik direct mee was en meevoelde met de personages. Ik verloor halverwege wel wat van mijn interesse, maar bleef wel gemakkelijk doorlezen.
Al bij al gewoon ok.
Ook fijn dat ik deze serie als voltooid kan markeren.
DNF O’Malley, Daniel – The Rook (The Checquy Files #1) DNF

Ik wou dit boek echt goed vinden, maar kon me er niet door worstelen.
Het idee is nochtans super intrigerend, speciaal en origineel. Het maakte me echt curieus om meer te leren, maar tegelijkertijd vond ik de manier van schrijven zo info-dumpy dat ik iedere keer weer uit het verhaal werd getrokken.
Het was uiteindelijk omdat ik merkte dat ik telkens met tegenzin het boek oppakte, dat ik besloot om niet meer verder te lezen. Misschien dat ik deze ooit nog een tweede kans geef, maar voor nu geef ik het op.

Told in racing dual timelines, with a dark campus setting and a darker look at friendship, love, obsession, and ambition, In My Dreams I Hold A Knife is an addictive, propulsive read you won’t be able to put down.
Extreem vermakelijke, moeilijk neer te leggen thriller. Las een beetje zoals een soap, met de onwaarschijnlijke vriendengroep à la The Breakfast Club en de tonnen drama. Fast food voor het hoofd.
Heel slim geconstrueerd, met de alternerende tijdslijnen en het sympathieke/onsympathieke hoofdpersonage Jessica, met op gepaste tijden een glimp in het hoofd van één van de andere personages.
Elk puzzelstukje heeft een doel en de puzzel valt op het einde heel bevredigend in elkaar.

The Rook heb ik zelf al enkele jaren geleden gelezen en als ik het me goed herinner moest ik daar ook even inkomen. Ondertussen ligt het vervolgdeel al sinds mijn vorige bezoekje aan Londen in de kast op me te wachten maar ik ben er nog steeds niet aan toegekomen vermits er nog veel andere boeken zijn die me meer aanspreken.
